1995 saw the first release by Mark Zowie, under the co-production guise of Lil’ Devious, later as Percy Filth, Burn The Negative and currently running parallel to Mark Zowie, his We Take Polaroids guise.
Described by DJ mag as ‘the chameleons of House Music’, their ethos was, that there was NO signature sound, just varying degrees of deep, jazzy, latino, tech and disco inspired house music. The same can now be said for his own solo album, ‘Outside The Circle’.
Zowie successfully straddles each genre here with sophistication, credibly and clearly showing a disdain for pigeon holes, yet a passion for music which is all about House Music.
‘Outside The Circle’ shows depth and song structures from tracks such as ‘Wait’ and ‘Do You Believe?” Feat Tigerlight, to the acidic searing tones of ‘An American Warehouse In London’. Not to mention the first single and radio ready ‘Gone Missing’ feat Shyam P to the ode to ‘89 old skool ragga charms of “Pick It Up / Drop It” feat Fitz Da Chilli Punk.
The album celebrates with dips, jumps and glides across a wealth of sounds, confidently displaying heaviness, club ready beauties, radio friendly accessibility and deep underground earthy vibrancy. It’s an album for producers and DJ’s alike, but ready to sit in the collections of all who love HOUSE MUSIC.
“From a production stand point, I genuinely can’t decide who I am, I have a long standing love of all kinds of House music, so I allow myself the freedom to skip around and do as I feel. Why wouldn’t I? I can’t stay within the structures of a single genre. I can’t be a one vibe producer, there really would be no point”.
